AnnotationThe conference saw the launch of NIACE's policy discussion paper "Learning to grow older and bolder". The conference was also a key step in the Government's move towards developing a "learning society", in which everyone, regardless of age, routinely expects to learn and upgrade skills throughout life. There were three sessions of workshops. In the first, groups of people considered how learning was perceived by older learners and the practicalities of improving provision for the age group. The second session examined six areas of interest: social exclusion; health links; learning cities and communities; volunteering; older employees; and optimising resources. In the third session, local authorities considered action to be taken following ideas discussed at the conference, one of which was the need to involve older people in lifelong learning. (RH).
