AnnotationThe results are presented of a survey of 662 people aged 75 years or older living in Oxfordshire and 140 of their family carers. The circumstances and care of older people in various contexts are discussed: individuals caring for themselves; family members receiving informal care; and recipients of formal care services. The results demonstrate the value that many older people place on their ability to manage and maintain their autonomy at home, and that dependency on care services often causes distress. Much care was found to be purchased privately - sometimes by those on very low incomes - but more often by older people with higher incomes who were often choosing not to rely on their partner for care, a common situation for lower income groups. The importance of preventing dependency at all levels is emphasised. The paper concludes with some observations about tackling inequality, targeting services more rigorously, and promoting inter-agency and multidisciplinary approaches to older people's needs. (RH).
