AnnotationThe Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) is an interdisciplinary, longitudinal research project with the objective of determining the predictors and consequences of changes in physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning in older people. This is the second part of a planned 3-part study (the final volume covering 1998-1999 will be published in 2001). It is intended as a sequel to the baseline findings of the first part, and serves as a source-book on changes in the four components of functioning found in the respondents. The consequences of changes in the various domains of functioning are described. These include: changes in physical function; the effects of chronic diseases on mobility limitations and mortality; predictors of osteoporotic fractures; determinants of change in cognitive functions; determinants of change in emotional functioning (depression, self-efficacy and mastery); and changes in social functioning (social involvement, personal networks, social participation and integration). The report concludes with a perspective for future interdisciplinary research within the LASA concept. (RH).
