Annotation | Older people make up an increasing proportion of the population; and it is projected that by 2021, 40% of people in the UK will be aged 50 and over. This, the seventh publication in the Social Focus series, looks at the composition, experiences and lifestyles of older people in the UK today, as well as illustrating changes over time. It gives a broad overview, drawing together statistics from a wide variety of referenced sources. Where possible, older people are defined as those aged 50 and over, in order to cover the span from those who are active through to those who are dependent. In this way, it has been possible to examine issues such as changes in labour market activity, living arrangements, sources of income, and health and social care as people age. "Social focus on older people" is aimed at a wide audience: policy makers in the public and private sectors; market researchers; journalists and other commentators; the business community; academics, teachers and students; and the general public.
