AnnotationExtraCare's central principle is that residents should enjoy both independent living and the security of 24-hour on-site care and support. Since 1990, Hanover Housing Association has developed extraCare housing for older people who wish to continue to live an independent lifestyle, but may require additional care. This research sets out to evaluate the experience of extraCare from the viewpoint of the consumers, and is based on in-depth interviews with 165 residents, the estate managers, and staff in social services departments (SSDs). It explores the range of options residents had before entering extraCare, looking at the reasons for residents deciding to move home, and assessing their satisfaction and perceptions of extraCare housing. The views of social services and estate managers are also included. The significant benefits are highlighted and good practice recommendations made. A further report, looking at the interface between the RSL (registered social landlord), social services and care providers is due for publication in Autumn 1999. (RH).
