Annotation | The Treaty of Amsterdam is the first European treaty containing rules that could be a basis for the development of a European policy for older people. This document explains the notion of "European citizenship" (which does not replace national citizenship): under the Treaty's rules, the European Union (EU) is obliged to take account of diversity of member states. The Treaty's rules are also concerned with combatting social exclusion and discrimination, and with consumer protection and health care - all relevant to older people. (RH). |
