AnnotationThe work of AGILE, an age-related clinical interest group of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), is described. This publication highlights the ways in which AGILE has influenced the development of care of older people in the UK and the challenges that it faces in the future. Several chapters outline the development of published guidelines and standards: guidelines in good practice (1985); standards of clinical practice (1991); and more recent guidelines on quality of stroke care (1996), managing falls (1998), hip fracture (1995), and osteoporosis (1996). CSP's submission to the Royal Commission on Funding of Long Term Care, putting the case for physiotherapy with older people, is summarised, followed by AGILE's response to "With respect to old age", the Royal Commission's report. Future concerns include the influence of the "new elderly" on healthcare, and the debate on clinical effectiveness. (RH).
