AnnotationThe Florida Care College was a long-term care training programme established within an academic department to train nursing home and domiciliary care staff to manage residents with memory impairment. The 16-hour curriculum covered eight areas: philosophy of dementia care management; individualised goals and activities; causes of dementia; identification of problem behaviours; behavioural management techniques; communication strategies; environmental modification; and staff stress management. A total of 135 staff were recruited from 26 facilities, and assigned to one of three training conditions: university classroom instruction; train-the-trainer instruction; and intensive staff training for facility-based staff. All three training strategies resulted in significant improvement in knowledge which was maintained at 3-month follow-up. (RH).
