AnnotationUtilisation studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the impact of informal support on the use of formal services by caregivers of dementia patients. However, these supports may be an important factor in overcoming the barriers to formal services. This Texas, US study provides a preliminary investigation of the mediative function of professional informal supports as it relates to the use of three types of respite services by dementia caregivers. The mediative function offers an explanation for how informal support may facilitate the use of some formal services, such as respite, by providing information, encouragement and instrumental activities. Professional mediators are likely to be effective in bringing about the use of in-home respite, but may not be as effective in overcoming the socio-emotional barriers that may characterise services such as daycare. Informal support may be uniquely effective in facilitating some types of service, but the quality of referral may not be uniform. Additional research is needed to clarify the temporal order of need, knowledge, mediating activity and service use. (RH).
