AnnotationThe Strathcarron peninsula in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands has an ageing population. Many people live alone, an experience compounded by their geographic isolation. The Strathcarron Project began in the early 1990s, with the principal aim of meeting older people's needs in a remote rural community. A secondary objective has been to involve members of the local community at the forefront of planning and developing the project, with the statutory agencies, social work, housing and health in a support role. It is based on the premise that local people are best placed to understand the needs of the community. The project has been responsible for the Howard Doris Centre (opened in 1996), which offers some sheltered accommodation, a day centre and lunch club, respite care, medical beds, and a library. This report outlines the processes in developing the Project and the Centre, and the value of partnerships between communities and services. (RH).
