Annotation | Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity, mortality and cost among the older population. Previous attempts at assessing the cost-effectiveness of treatments for osteoporosis relative to other uses of health care resources have been constrained by the availability of adequate data, and have taken the form of decision analytical models. This document details the results of a structured review, the purpose of which was to identify and to critically appraise economic evaluations of interventions for osteoporosis. The focus is a critical assessment of the methodology of those studies, and their empirical details, particularly relating to the clinical assumptions and data sources. There is also a summary of, and comment on, the recent US guidelines for osteoporosis published by the National Osteoporosis Foundation. The appendix comprises data tables for economic evaluations included in the review. (RH). |
