This report provides for the first time detailed estimates of employment in independent sector homes. The survey was conducted from August 1996 to January 1997, overseen by the Joint Care Council, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) and the ADSS (Association of Directors of Social Services) Workforce Sub-group. The response rate was 33.9% - 2,791 of the 8,479 homes asked to take part. The survey aimed to cover topics necessary to understanding the basic structure of the workforce, and to reflect the sector's information needs. These comprise: characteristics of homes and their clients; workforce numbers and structure; recruitment and retention of staff; and qualifications, training and training needs. Statistical tables are provided throughout compiled from survey results. Annexes include statistics from Department of Health (DoH), Scottish Office and Welsh Office sources, and the survey's questionnaire. (RH).
