AnnotationThis study examines the medications stored in the homes of older people, to determine the nature and extent of medications kept, and to provide information on the storage and disposal of medications by older people living in the community. The sample comprised 144 people aged 65 and over who were recipients of home health care services and living in two suburban areas of Quebec City, Canada. Data collection was by means of a home interview by a nurse visiting older people in their homes. The total number of medications (prescribed and over-the-counter - OTC) recorded was 2,774 with an average of 19.7 per person. Approximately half of the medications accumulated were prescribed (1,427), while the remaining 1,347 were obtained OTC. Among medications prescribed, most were cardiovascular / diuretics (28%) and medications for the central nervous system (19%). Skin/ mucous membrane preparations (37%) and gastro-intestinal medications (17%) were the most frequently found OTC medications. Overall, 16% of all the medications or 26% of the medications with an expiry date available (605 medications did not have an expiry date given) were kept past their expiry date. (RH).
