AnnotationIntergenerational visitation programmes have demonstrated advantages for the young and old, but few programmes last more than a year or two. Incorporating long-term intergenerational programmes into both the school curriculum and community cultural life was the aim of a project launched in 1988 in Phoenix, Arizona. Every week or so, classrooms of children visit nearby nursing home residents, and develop friendships while pursuing educational activities. Carefully planned and widespread community support through board participation, donations, and publicity has enabled the programme to continue to expand, while the budget has decreased. (RH).
