AnnotationThe report from the Royal Commission on Long Term Care for the Elderly, coupled with the White Paper "Modernising social services" present the biggest challenge and changes in social services for decades affecting statutory, voluntary and private sectors. The main focus of this conference organised by the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) was the National Required Standards for residential and nursing homes for older people. This article outlines the main points made by speakers. "Room for a woo" considers the layout of a room of 10 square metres minimum size demonstrated at the conference. One speaker, Jef Smith from Counsel and Care, provided a contrasting picture of the kind of room he would want if he were to go into residential care. (RH).
