Annotation | The author's research, based on a dissertation at the University of Sheffield, argues that a geographical insight is useful for dispelling some negative stereotypes. Her research explores the geographical experiences of five older people in a residential home in South Yorkshire. Findings are expressed as dimensions ranging from separation within the home and from the outside world, to solidarity within the home between residents and with staff. The way in which residents reacted and adjusted demonstrated a self-determination by choosing to "mix" or "keep to themselves". They also commented on reservations about moving into the home: if residential homes are seen as a positive transition, the negative stereotypes will be less likely to prevail. (RH). |
