Annotation | Parallels are drawn between UK and French social policy on support for older people. In 1997, new legislation was passed in France reforming its approach to community care. The new form of "dependency benefit" for older people, the Prestation Spécifique Dépendance (PSD), introduced in January 1997, is explained. Since March 1999, representatives of the départements have, in common with groups representing older people, called on the government to rethink its approach to severely disabled older people's care needs, and to recognise that the risk of dependency is one which all members of society face.
