AnnotationAs part of the "Debate of the Age" activities in 1998, two sixth formers at King Edward VII School in Sheffield conducted a survey of their peers' knowledge and opinions about pensions. This article reports the methods and results. While three-quarters had not thought at all about their own pensions, a similar proportion did have knowledge of the types of pensions available, trends in that state pension's real value, and its value compared with the German equivalent. Other research on younger people has tended to produce negative attitudes towards, and scant knowledge of, older people. The survey's results indicate that young people have low confidence in current pension arrangements - occupational pensions and state pensions funded from National Insurance - in the UK. (RH).
