Annotation | Although older people are a significant part of the homeless population, they have largely been ignored by service providers and policy makers. The author draws on empirical studies, theoretical contributions and literature reviews about homelessness in Britain, Europe and the US. Knowledge is drawn from the fields of sociology and psychology of deviance, urban anthropology, psychiatry, housing studies, social policy and social history. Part I outlines the prevalence and patterns of homelessness, and presents biographical evidence on the pathways into homelessness for older people: the breakdown of family households; itinerant working lives; and mental illness and stressful events. Chapter 7 draws on empirical findings, principally the author's Four-City Study (London, Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool). Part II describes the circumstances and problems of older homeless people. It summarises British policies and services, examines the extent to which these meet the needs of the older homeless, and identifies pioneering projects in the UK and elsewhere. The book concludes with a chapter on resettling older homeless people, and makes recommendations for service development. (RH). |
