Annotation | There has been a lack of appropriate assessment instruments regarding the marital relationships of older couples, with only one - the Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire for Older Persons (S N Haynes et al, 1992) - developed specifically for older people. The purpose of this study was to begin to meet this need by developing a new assessment instrument for use with those aged 50 and over, the Marriage Problems Scale - 50+ (MPS-50+), and to provide initial evidence of its reliability and validity. Subjects' responses to an interview and several existing marital assessment instruments were used to construct an initial pool of 94 items for the MPS-50+. This version of the MPS-50+ was administered to subjects in a second round of data collection and was then shortened and refined via principal components factor analysis, yielding a 50-item scale. The final version of the MPS-50+ is presented, with data supporting the scale's reliability and validity. (RH). |
