Annotation | As part of a national research programme for the Department of Health (DoH), the Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU) has been looking at how social services departments (SSDs) can keep track of the impact of what they do. SPRU has been investigating social care outcomes for older people living in their own homes and their carers, to include: older people receiving high and low levels of home care; people who do not leave their homes; those who attend day centres; and ethnic minority groups. Findings suggest that social care outcomes, as distinct from health outcomes, can be understood within the following framework: quality of life outcomes; change outcomes; and service process outcomes. All outcomes must be identified individually for each client. SPRU's research sheds light on methods of consulting older people and carers. A more detailed report of this research by Hazel Qureshi, Charles Patmore, Elinor Nicholas and Claire Bamford is published as "Overview: outcomes of social care for older people and carers" (University of York).
