Annotation | A new class of agents, cholinesterase inhibitors, is now available for the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The drugs concerned are: tetrahydroaminoacridine (tacrine), donepezil hydrochloride, and rivastigmine. This article briefly reviews these new drugs, and outlines the implications for psychiatrists. Studies of other drugs - metrifonate, and other anticholinesterase agents - are also summarised. (RH). |
