AnnotationAlthough many studies have shown a relationship between caregiving and psychological health, far fewer have documented the impact that caregiving may have on physical health and health behaviours. This US study compared lifestyle and health behaviours of 57 caregiver wives and 51 caregiver daughters recruited through a Caregiver Health Project offered by Stanford University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. In general, caregivers were similar to population norms in their age group. However, caregivers in this sample were more likely to consume alcohol, but consumed less per day than their peers. 48% of the sample exercised regularly. Chi-square analysis of wives and daughters revealed only that daughters were more likely to smoke than wives. The two groups appeared similar on all other health behaviours of interest (i.e. medication use, alcohol consumption or exercise habits). The need for continued research to include samples of less advantaged caregivers is discussed. (RH).
