AnnotationThis book and the biannual Short Course in Old Age Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry from which it arose aims to provide a current and comprehensive digest of areas of rapid development in old age psychiatry. The book is in three sections. The first examines research developments in dementia, including the molecular biology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and genetic risk factors, prion diseases, Lewy body and vascular dementia. Section two considers emerging treatments of the dementias, and ethical and philosophical issues such as physician-assisted suicide. The final section provides updates on the modern management of functional disorders in older people - depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and panic - including advances in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), antipsychotics, and family therapy.
