AnnotationIn July 1997, the NHS Executive published a consultation document on a proposed set of 15 clinical indicators for the National Health Service (NHS) with regard to the Performance Assessment Framework and the National Service Framework. Following the consultation, six indicators have been developed and are published in this document. The indicators are: rates of death in hospital within 30 days of surgery by method of admission; rates of death in hospital within 30 days of emergency admission with a hip fracture (neck of femur) for patients aged 65 and over; rates of death in hospital within 30 days of emergency admission with a heart attack (myocardial infarction), for patients aged 50 and over; rates of emergency readmission to hospital within 28 days of discharge from hospital; rates of discharge to usual place of residence within 56 days of emergency admission from there with a stroke, for patients aged 50 and over; and rates of discharge to usual place of residence within 28 days of emergency admission from there with a hip fracture (neck of femur), for patients aged 65 and over. The clinical indicators presented are based on data from the 1997/98 Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) dataset, for which quality and collection methods are discussed. (RH).
