AnnotationA recent US study reported that those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) living alone differed from those living with others in their demographic characteristics and service utilization patterns (Webber et al, The Gerontologist, 1994). In two studies, the authors examined these same issues in a Canadian sample and extended the examination of those with dementia living alone to include other variables (e.g.perceived risk) potentially related to service use. Similarities between the studies' findings included that more people with dementia living alone than with others were female and used home-delivered meals. Those living alone were viewed as at greater "risk" than those living with others, but were not institutionalised, and did not die at higher rates than those living with others. (RH).
