Annotation | Multidisciplinary teams are now widely accepted as the way forward in developing improved services for all client groups. In a pilot study undertaken by the author, evaluation of a 6-week rehabilitation programme for six patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their carers suggested that a multidisciplinary programme of therapy and informative talks was feasible. The content and duration of the daily and overall programme was optimal; and there was also good indication that psychological and quality of life benefits could be achieved. Based on the pilot study, a large scale study is evaluating the short and long term benefits and cost effectiveness of a rehabilitation programme for PD patients. This article outlines the essential elements for establishing a new service, including research on the needs, resources, support, teamwork, aims, design, evaluation, and purchaser satisfaction.
