Communication — the role of the speech and language therapist in Parkinson's disease | Author(s) | Mervyn Dent, Joanna Davies, Vaughan Pearce |
Journal title | Geriatric Medicine, vol 29, no 4, April 1999 |
Pages | pp 32-34 |
Keywords | Parkinson's disease ; Feeding capacity ; Speech therapy. |
Annotation | 50% of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience difficulties with swallowing (dysphagia) and communication, and these can be due to a number of factors. Both one-to-one and group therapy have been shown to bring about sustained improvement in communication and social functions. The authors explain why referral to a speech and language therapist has the potential to improve the quality of life of patients with PD and their family carers. (RH). |
