Annotation | Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an insidious disease that is costly in terms of human suffering and healthcare resources, with family members and professional carers in residential homes carrying much of the burden. The management of AD requires an integrated approach that meets the needs of both sufferers and carers. It is in the interest of the NHS (National Health Service) to help ensure that patients have access to services that enable them to remain at home for as long as possible. Improvements in symptom control using new drug therapies may help to delay the need for institutional care, and help ease the burden for carers by reducing the amount of commitment required. (RH). |
