AnnotationPopulation ageing may be defined as an increased proportion of people in the population at higher ages. In the past, human population ageing, such as has already occurred in Sweden and Austria, has often erroneously been thought to be a new phenomenon, brought about by recent changes in mortality. In China, the population's age structure has been affected by changes in fertility and in the balance of mortality, as well as many social factors. This paper provides a brief summary of the trends towards the maturation of the Chinese population from a youthful to an ageing structure, by reviewing the current situation of the main causes of population ageing in China.
