Annotation | Life expectancy at birth in the 358 local authorities in England is examined in the context of socio-economic deprivation. The paper maps geographical patterns in life expectancy at local level, and provides a measure of the "pervasiveness" of inequality, i.e. the proportion of areas where longevity deviates from the norm. Gender differences, and age and gender specific trends in mortality are also examined in relation to deprivation. Analysis is based on data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) up to 1996 inclusive. (RH). |
