AnnotationThe Western General Hospitals NHS Trust serves the population of north Edinburgh. The service encompasses medicine of old age and psychiatry of old age. From April 1999, these services will be managed by the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. The review visited current services, to examine future plans for services for frail older people and the close relationship with psychiatry of old age. The review's findings are described under the following headings: planning and commissioning of services; leading and managing the service; the quality of care and services; and the quality of life for patients. The review found an excellent responsive service in which many good practices were identified. Recommendations are made for a review of the discharge policy and standards, and with regard to the standard of support services. (RH).
