AnnotationDementia is a disease that affects both cognition (thinking abilities) and behaviour, and it is often behaviour "problems" that result in a reduced quality of life for the person and staff in care settings. This training guide has been written to assist staff to: consider personal responses to an individual's behaviour; identify some techniques for responding to individuals; understand the reasons for behaviours; and adopt more positive and person-centred approaches. Appropriate and inappropriate responses to challenging behaviour, such as the use of physical restraint and drug treatments, are discussed. It includes case studies and exercises to illustrate the sorts of situations and scenarios encountered when dealing with challenging behaviour and aggression in people with dementia. (RH).
