AnnotationThe social compact dates back to the collective pledge made by the Pilgrim Fathers. In the context of articles in the first part of this issue of Generations, it relates to intergenerational, reciprocal ties that hold families, governance and society together over time. Articles in Section 2 provide examples of how intergenerational interventions are being used to tackle contemporary risks and problems: grandparents raising grandchildren; after-school care; and helping families, vulnerable youth and older people at risk. The next section discusses how intergenerational policies and programmes are applied to larger societal issues: the generation gap; immigration; income supports; and the environment. Section 4 covers some specific programme and policy approaches (e.g. the arts, and foster families). Articles in the concluding section discuss ways of advancing the intergenerational vision and strategy. (RH).
