Annotation24 volunteers, aged over 50, were randomly assigned to 8 weeks supplementation with either lactose as a placebo, chromium, or copper. After 8 weeks supplementation, a significant decrease in plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol was observed for both the chromium and copper supplemented groups. A significant decrease in plasma triglycerides also was observed for the copper supplemented group. Males in the chromium supplemented group had a significant decrease in plasma glucose and serum insulin, and females in the copper supplemented group had significant decrease in plasma glucose. These data suggest that adequate chromium and copper intakes may have beneficial effects on lipids and glucose in the over 50s. (RH).
