Annotation | The influence of dietary calcium intake, body weight, and other lifestyle factors on bone mineral density (BMD) in post-menopausal women is examined. The study used data from a recent cross-sectional study in New Jersey (NJ) of 72 white post-menopausal women who were designated either osteoporotic or non-osteoporotic, based on BMD scores from the dual energy X-Ray absorptiometry scan. Osteoporotic women reported being slender and/or small-boned in stature, confined to the home, taking vitamin D supplements, and had a lower dietary calcium, phosphorus and magnesium intake relative to non-osteoporotic women. An increase in body weight appeared to be a protective factor for osteoporosis. (RH). |
