Annotation | Using data from the 1988 US National Health Interview Survey and the Child Health Supplement, the authors compared the health of women aged 40 and over living in one of the following family structures: alone, solely raising grandchildren, married with spoouse only, and married with spouse and grandchildren. In general, women solely raising grandchildren have poorer health compared to women of similar age living in other family structures, and considerably worse health than women with spouses raising grandchildren.
