AnnotationWhile the popular perception of "the family" is of the nuclear family household, there is considerable evidence to suggest that relationships with the wider kin group remain an important part of most people's lives. "Negotiating family responsibilities" is based on fieldwork for the Family Obligations Survey undertaken by Social and Community Planning Research (SCPR), and part of a research study funded by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) between 1985 and 1989. It concerns relationships between members of families in adult life, and includes verbatim accounts of conversations with family members, taken from qualitative interviews. The main areas of interest explored are: understanding family responsibilities; how these responsibilities work in practice as regards dependence and independence; reciprocity in commitment; making legitimate excuses; and the moral dimensions of family responsibilities. The authors expand theories on the nature of assistance within families, and argue that it is negotiated over time rather than given automatically. (RH).
