AnnotationThe objective of this study was to examine the possibility of developing a standard assessment instrument for residents in care homes, which could assess individual care needs, assist in constructing care plans, and provide appropriate information on the costing the level of care provided. Following a focused training programme in eight homes, staff using a modified American Minimum Data Set / Resident Assessment Instrument (MDS/RAI) carried out 125 assessments. This pilot study indicated the MDS/RAI has potential to be used in continuing care homes in the UK. Comparisons between residents and types of homes could be made between homes providing for reasonably similar residents or across geographical areas of a purchasing authority. A UK version of a training manual for the MDS/RAI is in preparation. (RH).
