AnnotationEquity release schemes are financial products that allow homeowners to release the capital available in their property above any amount owed on a mortgage. This report examines different schemes that are available and what they mean to the consumer. The National Consumer Council (NCC) concludes that equity release is not a simple answer to public sector funding problems for housing repair, pensions, or long-term care. However, equity release schemes could benefit the poorest and older people - but only if properly regulated and managed, and detailed advice and information is available to consumers. (RH).
