Annotation | Two NHS doctors join in the debate about the past, present and future of our health care system, and express concern about how the National Health Service, and particularly acute hospitals, is meeting the needs of older patients. The pressure on hospital beds means that those who do gain admission are turned around very quickly, are not being given the opportunity to recover before they are discharged, and most often with no adequate rehabilitation programme. The authors argue the case for more efficient ways of caring for older people in hospital, which should be based on acute treatment, recuperation and rehabilitation. Only when rehabilitation is re-instated will the difficulties described be resolved. (RH). |
