KeywordsSocial security benefits.
AnnotationThe emergence of provident funds (or compulsory savings schemes) in some Third World countries since the early 1950s provides an example of the how adaptable the social security concept is. The objectives of this paper are: first, to define the concept of a provident fund and place it in its social security context; second, to compare the features of Third World provident funds; third, to explore their social security, social, and economic roles; and finally, to look to their future in terms of their possible transformation into social insurance systems, or their evolution into social security hybrids.
