AnnotationThe Well Elderly Study was a randomised clinical trial conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive, culturally sensitive occupational therapy specifically targeted for urban, multi-ethnic, independent-living older people. This article reports on use of translation and back-translation procedures to obtain appropriate meaning for the Chinese translation of the SF-36 used in the Study in a Mandarin-speaking group in Southern California. Results suggest that this translation of the SF-36 can be used to assess multiple dimensions of health in a Mandarin-speaking population of older people. (RH).
