Annotation | In this random sample study of people aged 60 and over in Auckland, New Zealand, those living in institutions were almost four times more likely to sustain a hip fracture than those living in their own homes. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, the risk of hip fracture associated with living in an institution remained significantly increased, although the magnitude of risk was somewhat diminished. The factors that place those living in institutions at increased risk of hip fracture need to be identified, and effective intervention strategies implemented. (RH). |
