AnnotationThe 1999 United Nations (UN) International Year of Older Persons provides an opportunity for government decision makers, policy makers, researchers, practitioners, non-government organisations (NGOs), professional and community associations, and the public at large to focus specifically on the situation of older people. This article has three aims. It traces the history and development of the International Year of Older Persons. It then discusses the processes for setting the research agenda. Finally, it considers the contribution that gerontological research can make globally to providing findings that are relevant to policy, and in putting ageing on policy agendas. (RH).
