AnnotationGuidance is given on the limits on working time and the entitlements provided for the in the Working Time Regulations 1998 (SI 1998/1833). The Regulations implement the EC directive on the organisation of working time (the Working Time Directive) and provisions concerning working time on the protection of young people at work (the Young Workers Directive). This booklet explains how the Regulations work and how an employer may seek to comply with them. The main provisions of the Regulation are: a limit on average weekly working time to 48 hours (though individuals can choose to work longer); a limit on night workers' average normal daily working time to 8 hours; a requirement to offer health assessments to night workers; minimum daily and weekly rest periods; rest breaks at work; and paid annual leave. It should be noted that this booklet gives only general guidance and should not be regarded as a complete or authoritative statement of the law. (RH).
