AnnotationThe cultural and social history of ageing is explored by examining two of the author's research projects. The first - which resulted in the 1989 publication, "Old age in the old regime: image and experience in eighteenth century France" - identified a change in cultural representations of old age in the second half of the 18th century. The second project seeks to explore the period after the French Revolution and before the end of the 19th century, when retirement emerged as a common experience. The ideas, practices and strategies of retirement in a group of French civil servants are examined. The author intends a contribution to history of the cultural origins of retirement and the welfare state in France. (RH).
