AnnotationAlthough telephoning is one of the most suitable activities for home volunteering, little is known about volunteering from home. A comparative study of four telephone contact schemes was carried out during 1998. The results, problems encountered and management issues are described in this report. It outlines the work of the well-established Central Aberdeenshire Telephone Service run by the Gordon Volunteer Centre, which contributed considerable expertise. The general findings are given for three pilot telephone befriending schemes, set up under the auspices of Engage Scotland: Edinburgh and Leith Age Concern Befriending Scheme, WRVS West Fife Good Neighbours, and the Wing Hong Chinese Elderly Centre in Glasgow. The aim of the study was to extract general guidance on management practice which would be applicable to telephone volunteering in detached situations. The report should be of interest to volunteer engaging agencies, volunteer bureaux and self-help groups; to agencies and individuals working with the older population, disabled people or carers; and to organisations operating in rural areas.
