Annotation | Many European countries including England, Finland and Sweden are experiencing a number of common trends which are causing politicians and other policy makers to question the most appropriate role of government in helping to meet the health, housing and welfare needs of older people. This collection of papers arose from a conference on Housing and Care, organised by Eurolink Age in 1997 and a small network of academics and practitioners from Finland, Sweden and the UK. The network's main aim was to explore ideas across cultures and disciplines associated with housing and community care, including: transport; planning integrated services; home as a work environment; and exercise programming for older people. Another paper describes the Helsinki Alzheimer Association Activities Centre. As a whole, the book calls for recognition that quality of life and social integration for older people encompasses a much broader range of services and issues than are usually associated with community care.
