Annotation | Literature on successful ageing has devoted much attention to factors that protect older people from risk situations. The present study aims to delineate the process by which social support permits better health outcomes in older adulthood. One aspect of perceived control specific to the social domain was hypothesised to mediate the support-outcome relationship. Outcome measures included depression, life satisfaction, and self-reported perceived physical health. Two study groups, each of some 250 independently living over 65s, were used in testing the hypothesised model against two alternative hypotheses. Results indicate that perceived control mediates the support-outcome relationship. (RH). |
